As the final chapter of The Twilight Saga comes to the big screen, we spotlight the newest vampire covens of Breaking Dawn Part 2. Bella has begun her life as a vampire and brought into the world her and Edward's daughter, Renesmee. As the Volturi scheme to conquer their growing family, the wolf pack and vampires from around the world join forces with the Cullens to stand against them.
By Lizerne Guiting
Vladimir was part of a once great coven, which was decimated by the Volturi when they came to power. Both Vladimir and Stefan lost their mates in the battle.
Always looking for ways to overthrow or fight the Volturi, Stefan and Vladimir come to Forks when they hear news of the Cullens standing against their foes. They are not so much interested in Renesmee as they are in their personal vendettas.
Amun, the leader of the Egyptian coven, has had his differences with the Volturi, but submitted to them for his own survival as they were taking power. Amun stands by Carlisle as a witness to Renesmee's growth, but refuses to participate in a fight against the Volturi.
Kebi stays close to her mate Amun in an obedient manner. She doesn't say much, and the two keep to themselves, distancing themselves from the other covens. Amun refuses to touch Renesmee or let Kebi touch her as well, not wanting them to experience Renesmee's gift or hear her explanation.
As a human, Benjamin's talents were already manifesting themselves, and Amun turned him into a vampire knowing he would have special gifts. Amun wishes to use Benjamin as a weapon for his own motives, but Benjamin refuses. He and his mate Tia side with the Cullens and agree to fight for them, believing it's the right thing to do.
Special Ability: He can manipulate the elements: wind, earth, fire, and water.
Like the rest of the vampires in her coven, Tia has midnight hair and an olive-toned pallor, and they look so much alike they could easily pass for a biological family. Tia is Benjamin's mate, and both agree to side with the Cullens and fight for them if necessary.
Bella finds the vampires from the rainforest intimidating, describing them as tall, fierce, and wearing nothing but animal skins! Isolated in the wetlands of Brazil, she and her coven remain unknown to most vampires, including the Volturi.
Zafrina serves as the spokesperson of her coven, although they have no leader. Zafrina and Senna hear Renesmee's explanation and find her irresistible. As Bella struggles to develop her special ability, Zafrina uses her own gift to aid her.
Special Ability: She can make her target see any illusion she wants – usually a mirage of the rainforest – or nothing at all.
Siobhan is described as having an "immense presence," and although her mate is Liam, she is undoubtedly the leader of their coven.
Special Ability:
Carlisle believes Siobhan has the power to influence an outcome by picturing an event and willing it into existence. Siobhan doubts her gift, but Carlisle convinces her to envision a peaceful outcome between them and the Volturi anyway.
Liam is Siobhan's mate and comes to Forks with the rest of his coven to aid the Cullens in standing against the Volturi threat. He's described as territorial and initially didn't want Maggie to join his and Siobhan's coven, but it all worked out (possibly because Siobhan willed it).
Transformed into a vampire when she was 15, Maggie is small and unimposing.
Special Ability: She can tell if someone is lying and can see their true intentions – a gift that makes adults often feel uncomfortable around her.
Kate is a member of the Denali clan who are "vegetarian" like the Cullens. She considers Irina, Tanya and Carmen as her sisters, although they are not biologically related. They all attended Bella and Edward's wedding – one of the highly anticipated main events in Breaking Dawn.
Special Ability: She's able to run an electrical current across her skin and shock others. She helps Bella develop her special ability as a vampire.
An American Nomad, Garrett comes to the Cullens as an old friend of Carlisle, and later joins the Denalis to be with Kate. Up for any challenge, he agrees to experience Kate's impressive talent – a shock of electricity – that knocks him to the ground.
The Denalis and Cullens go way back, and Tanya has always maintained an unrequited interest in Edward. Despite her stunning beauty, he didn't feel the same way and turned her down – in a gentlemanly fashion, of course. The Denalis remained close friends, and the Cullens consider them extended family.
She is one of the vampires of the Denali clan, which resides in Alaska. In the book, the Denali sisters are described as so beautiful that when Bella sees them at her wedding, it makes her stomach hurt!
This vampire is Carmen's companion, and both Eleazar and Carmen joined the rest of the Denali sisters for a more peaceful life as "vegetarians."
Special Ability: He can sense the type and strength of gifted vampires' talents. He used his gift to uphold the law and was once part of the Volturi, but left when he met Carmen. It is Eleazar who reveals Bella's gift to her, teaches her how to fight, and provides the Cullens with useful information on the Volturi.
In the book, Irina is part of the Denali coven and the only sister who skips Bella and Edward's wedding. She was fond of Laurent, the vampire in Twilight, who was killed by the werewolves. Irina wanted to avenge his death and kill the wolf pack, although Carlisle would not allow it. Her grudge becomes the catalyst that later sets into motion an altercation with the Volturi and the Cullens.
Renesmee is the daughter of Edward and Bella, born Sept. 11, 2006. She was conceived when Bella was still human, so she is half human, half vampire. Irina and the Volturi mistake her for an immortal child, a vampire turned at such a young age that she would be a threat to their secrecy. Jacob imprinted on Renesmee at birth.
Special Ability: She can let others hear her thoughts and memories by touching them.
Age: 17
Her Story: The book is written from Bella's first-person p.o.v. and opens with her leaving behind her mother Renee (who's on her second marriage). Bella trades her sunny Phoenix home for the rainy city of Forks, WA, to stay with her dad, Chief of Police Charlie Swan.
Other Facts: Her "old soul" tends to make her the natural caretaker of her parents, and she spends most nights cooking for her dad. She's also a braniac, and her clumsiness is a magnet for danger. Edward feels compelled to be her protector, even if he considers himself a danger to her.
Age: He's physically 17, but was turned into a vampire in 1918 as he lay dying from the Spanish influenza. The transformation takes three torturous days.
Special Abilities: He can hear people's thoughts - everyone except Bella's. He's also a terrific pianist and can speak multiple languages. Not all vampires have a special ability, but upon turning into a bloodsucker, human senses, strength and coordination become heightened and some traits are enhanced.
Other Facts: His favorite meal is mountain lion. When we first meet him, he's posing as a junior in high school, drives a Volvo and likes listening to Debussy.
Bella's dad and Forks' Chief of Police enjoys fishing, watching baseball, and hanging out with his good friend Billy Black. Bella's mother left him and remarried, and he's been somewhat of a loner ever since. Although good intentioned, he doesn't hesitate to let Bella know – via dry humor – that he disapproves of Edward, believing Jacob was a better choice for her.
Carlisle is revered as one of Fork's best doctors. He's had more than 300 years to perfect his craft and control his bloodlust—human blood and touch have no effect on him, unlike others of his kind who are ruled by their instincts.
Age: Physically 23, but born in the 1640s.
Special Ability: He believes his enhanced ability is his compassion and he lives by a strong moral code. He won’t change a human into a vampire unless it's to save a life. As the patriarch of the Cullen family, he changed all the members with the exception of Alice and Jasper.
Esme: Depressed by the death of her infant son, she jumped off a cliff attempting suicide. Presumed dead, she was admitted to the morgue, but Carlisle could still hear her heart beat and decides to change her. They fall in love and marry, and Esme serves as the adoptive mother to the rest of the Cullens. She's known to love passionately and loves her adoptive children as she did her own son.
Age: Physically 26, but born in the late 1800s.
Alice is described as pixie-like and lithe, sometimes gracefully pirouetting about. She's also vivacious, loves planning extravagant parties and attempts to help Bella dress more fashionably.
Age: Alice's physical age is 20, but she was born in 1901.
Special Abilities: Alice can see the futures of humans and vampires based on the decisions they make. Alice had no recollection of her human memories. She finds out she was confined to an asylum for her premonitions. When she foresees meeting Jasper, she sets out to find him. The pair fall in love and seek out the Cullens through Alice's visions. Because of Alice's foresight, she immediately accepts Bella as her friend and treats her like a sister.
Jasper fed on human blood before joining the Cullen family and has the most difficulty controlling his thirst. The Cullens live on animal blood, which they jokingly refer to as a "vegetarian" diet. Before turning into a vampire, Jasper served in the Confederate States Army in the Civil War.
Age: Jasper's physical age is 20; he was born in 1843.
Special Abilities: His leadership qualities manifested in his expertise of controlling others' emotional climates.
Rosalie found Emmett bleeding to death after he had been mauled by a bear and brought him to Carlisle to turn him. Good humored and blessed with enough brawn to match Rosalie's beauty, the two found love in each other.
Age: Emmett's physical age is 20; he was born in 1915.
Special Abilities: Emmett’s special ability is his physical strength, which he's very confident in. Although initially wary of Bella, he remains supportive of his brother.
Rosalie's unfortunate end to her human life came at the hands of her then fiancé and his friends. Carlisle found her dying and decided to turn her as a companion for Edward. She adapted to life with the Cullens and eventually carried out her revenge on her fiancé. Her most exquisite trait is her beauty, but she's often portrayed as jealous of Bella’s humanity. She also believes Bella might expose the family secret and openly disapproves of her, but the two finally find something on which they both see eye to eye.
Age: Rosalie's physical age is 18; she was born in 1915.
Sarcastic and sometimes too relaxed, he's one of Bella's best friends. An awkward love triangle emerges when he and Bella spend more time together. Jacob's initial position in the wolf pack was Beta, second only to Sam. As a descendant of Ephraim Black (his great-great grandfather who led the pack and made a treaty with the Cullens), Jacob does, however have a birthright to Alpha wolf, which complicates things further down the road.
Jacob's father is part of the Quileute tribe and a direct descendant of a line of magical chieftains, born with the authority to protect humans from "cold ones" or vampires. He lives on the Indian reservation in La Push. Although they have a treaty with the Cullens, they're banned from the reservation.
As the first to come of age and transform into a wolf since the Cullens moved back into Forks, he became the Alpha of the pack. The book revealed that Sam actually turned down a scholarship because of becoming a wolf. Other pack members must follow his orders. In the Quileute tribe, the initial wolf transformation starts at puberty, triggered by the presence of a vampire.
He's a 16-year-old with a hot temper, and the one who Bella slaps, provoking his phasing into a dark, silver wolf. (You can watch Paul get pounded here.) Jacob phases too, and in the book, the two wolves brawl in the woods, but neither gets seriously hurt. That's because along with super strength, speed and lightning reflexes, they also possess super fast healing powers.
Embry is the same age as Jacob and also one of his closest friends. Meyer made her wolves enormous with thunderous growls. After all, they're the natural enemy of the vampires, and measure up in battle. The phasing transformation makes a boy's body mature quickly to manhood and doesn't allow him to continue aging until he decides to stop phasing. With their body temps running at about 108 degrees, they're hotter in more ways than one. And when they phase or transform into wolves, their bodies expand so abruptly, their clothes are ripped to shreds. So you see, going sans shirt is justifiable.
He was one of the first to transform into a wolf and later becomes the second to imprint, sort of like a love-at-first-sight bond that's ignited the second they set eyes on their soul mate. Later in the book series, the characters speculate that imprinting is a way to pass on the wolf gene. Another thing exclusive to the wolf pack is what Edward calls a "pack mind." They can read each other's thoughts, so there's no privacy or secrets.
The Volturi is a powerful coven of ancient vampires who lay down the law, and ensure that vampirism remains shrouded in secrecy. They're based in underground Volterra, Italy, and they're not friendly "vegetarians" like the Cullens. As the de facto leader of the Volturi, Aro is cunning and dangerous, but Sheen says he's also "a bit like a concerned grandfather at times with Edward…. His voice is quite gentle and soft and yet there's something kind of unhinged about him."
Special ability: By touching a person, he can read every thought the person has ever had.
Meyer revealed awhile back that the term Volturi refers specifically to its leaders Aro, Caius and Marcus, although there are many powerful members of its coven. Highly feared and respected is Jane, who is sadistic and lethal, although seemingly angelic.
Special ability: She can inflict the illusion of pain—and takes great pleasure in seeing others writhe in agony. Fanning says she loved playing someone evil for a change.
He's the best known tracker, and also a Volturi guard.
Special ability: Unlike James, he can track people by the tenor of their thoughts rather than their scent. He doesn't need to be relatively close to his victim, which allows him to track people from all over the world.
Other than being a (hunky) member of the Volturi guard, the books don't specify another known power. He does showcase fierce fighting skills, however. Check out Felix's smack down with Edward for yourself!
In the book, he's described with having shoulder-length white hair as pale as his skin, which is nearly translucent like an onion. He seems to be the most openly aggressive of the Volturi leaders, itching to kill.
He may be Caius' spitting image, but in reality, jovial Jamie's the stark opposite, cracking jokes during interviews, flashing wide grins at the photogs and keeping an androgynous appearance.
As one of the three ancient leaders of the Volturi, Marcus is a bit of a zombie, since not much has excited him in the last century or so. Meyer says he lost his mate in battle long ago.
Special ability: He can see relationship ties—not just of the romantic type—but how strong one's devotion is to another. It's an amazing power; he can figure out who would die for another, where one's true loyalties lie, and who are key leaders in battle. Upon seeing the strength of Edward's and Bella's love, he's stirred from his zombie state.
Wild and ferocious, Victoria's believed to have the special ability of self-preservation when escape is needed. She's also cunning and deceptive. To avenge her mate, she recruits Riley to do her bidding and creates an army of vampires with a plan to kill Bella.
Riley's unfortunate existence served as a pawn in Victoria's scheme for revenge. Feigning her love for him, she convinced him to lead her newborn vampire army against the Cullens. Although Edward tried to warn him of Victoria's true agenda, Riley believed her lies until his end.
Victoria ended Bree's short human life and forced her, along with other victims, into a vampire army. Bree exercised enough self-control to resist the scent of Bella's blood and ended up surrendering to the Cullens, however, Jane decided to torture her and have Felix kill her despite her ignorance of the laws. Stephenie Meyer wrote the melancholy backstory from Bree's perspective in The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner.
Trackers are obsessed with the thrill of hunting their prey. Upon getting a whiff of Bella's blood, James is sent into a hunting frenzy that can't be deterred. Even with all the Cullens (except Rosalie) siding with Bella, he welcomes the challenge they pose. Perhaps only death will stop him.
How do you kill a vampire? Only another vampire or werewolf can do this job: Tear him up and burn the pieces.
When we're first introduced to Laurent, he's keeping corrupt company with James and Victoria. Laurent's not exactly bad, he's simply following his carnal instinct. Vampires usually feed once every two weeks. If they drink human blood, their eyes turn red. Vampires who satiate their thirst by hunting animals have golden eyes. Black eyes indicate their thirst.
Friend or foe? It's hard to say at first. Jessica's mission to climb the social ladder is made a little easier with Bella around. Since the new girl is attracting all the attention, befriending her seems like the best Darwinian option. She does initially have some jealousy issues with Bella dating Edward, but it's difficult not to be when your "friend" is going out with a supermodel look-alike... whom Jessica set eyes on first.
Mike is amiable and always ready to lend a helping hand, but Bella's not one to go looking for too much attention. However, Bella's the new girl in a small town, and guys can't stop following her around. Mike's one of her loyal aficionados who won't pass up the opportunity to walk her to every class… and invite her to the school dance and a movie.
Bella may hang around creatures of myth an awful lot, but she's got human friends, too. Angela, the daughter of a Lutheran minister, genuinely befriends Bella on her first day of school. She may be shy, but her non-judgmental and kind personality makes her friendship priceless.
